Once included with Epidendrum this genus has 10 to 15, small to medium sized epiphytes or lithophytes that are deciduous in winter and tend to look like they may perish at that time. However they have bright, attractive flowers which when coupled with their small plant size make them a desirable subject for most collectors. Most of the species grow at low to moderate altitudes in warm to cool conditions. They have narrow spindle shaped pseudobulbs and flowers are borne on leafless stems.

Best grown in humid, bright light with a drier winter rest given to ensure leaves drop. In fact this rest is vital to ensure the health of the plants. The plants are best grown in a very open mix or perhaps best on a mount of hardwood or cork as the plants do best with their roots exposed to the moving humid air.
